ABERDEEN, Wa. — A boater was safely rescued Monday afternoon after a small fishing boat overturned in the Chehalis River near Morrison Park.
According to the Aberdeen Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 4:12 p.m. on October 5 to a report of an overturned fishing boat approximately 50 yards offshore from Morrison Park.
A 911 caller reported that the boat had capsized and its occupant was in the water swimming near the overturned vessel. Another fishing boat arrived in the area and began assisting the boater.
Aberdeen Police officers responded from both sides of the river while additional assistance was requested from the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office Boating Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard.
The boater was eventually able to swim to shore before boarding the assisting boat. He was then transported to a nearby boat launch, where members of the Aberdeen Fire Department evaluated him. No additional medical treatment was reported.
With help from other boaters in the area, the overturned fishing boat was towed to the boat launch and safely removed from the water.
The Aberdeen Police Department thanked the assisting boaters, Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Coast Guard and Aberdeen Fire Department for their coordinated response.
