THURSTON COUNTY ROCHESTER — A suspect was taken into custody after a pursuit on northbound Interstate 5 during which authorities say the suspect fired at a Washington State Patrol vehicle and later displayed a firearm during an encounter with deputies.

According to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, deputies assisted state troopers near milepost 88 at approximately 6:18 a.m. after the suspect reportedly fired at a pursuing patrol vehicle.

Spike strips brought the suspect’s vehicle to a stop on the freeway. The suspect then ran into a nearby fenced area, the sheriff’s office said.

When deputies confronted the suspect, the suspect attempted to flee and a Taser was deployed. Authorities said the suspect displayed a firearm during the encounter, prompting one deputy to fire multiple shots.

The suspect continued running toward a nearby Taco Bell, where several deputies confronted the individual. A Taser was deployed, and the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries related to the Taser deployment, according to the release. The release did not report any gunshot injuries. No law enforcement personnel were injured.

The Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team responded to conduct an independent investigation after the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations declined the case, the sheriff’s office said.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office will not participate in the independent investigation. Region 3 investigators will handle future updates and release the names of the deputies involved.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Thurston County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Authorities emphasized that the information released so far is preliminary.
