Child Safely Recovered Following Amber Alert; Suspect Arrested After Search Near Shel

SHELTON, Wash. — A 3-year-old child was safely recovered Wednesday afternoon following an Amber Alert and an extensive multi-agency search that began after an assault investigation in Shelton.

According to the Shelton Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 12:30 p.m. on May 20 to the 400 block of Park Street for a reported disturbance involving an assault. During the incident, a 3-year-old child who had been living with relatives was allegedly taken from the residence by his biological father, who was also identified as the assault suspect.

A short time later, a Shelton police officer located the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle fled, prompting a brief pursuit. Officers discontinued the pursuit after learning the young child was likely inside the vehicle, citing concerns for the child’s safety.

The vehicle was later discovered abandoned in a heavily wooded area. Shelton Police, with assistance from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office and Washington State Patrol, launched an extensive search effort that included multiple K9 deployments and aerial drone operations.

Based on the circumstances of the case and the father’s actions, authorities determined the child was in imminent danger. An Amber Alert was requested and issued on behalf of the Shelton Police Department within approximately two hours of the initial call.

Additional resources, including the FBI and the King County Sheriff’s Office Guardian One helicopter, were brought in to assist with the search.

At approximately 4 p.m., a homeowner in the 500 block of SE Binns Swiger Loop Road located both the child and the suspect. Authorities say the homeowner was able to secure the child while the father fled into a nearby wooded area.

Law enforcement officers and deputies, supported by K9 teams and Guardian One, continued the search and ultimately located the suspect, taking him into custody without further incident.

The child was evaluated by medical personnel and was reported to be in good condition. The suspect sustained minor injuries during the incident.

The Shelton Police Department thanked the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol, Mason County Fire District 4, MACECOM, the FBI, and the King County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in bringing the incident to a safe conclusion. Officials also expressed appreciation to community members who remained vigilant and assisted during the search effort.

The investigation remains active, and additional information may be released as it becomes available.
