A two-vehicle crash on State Route 107 near milepost 5 sent two people to the hospital Monday evening after a driver failed to yield and struck a fully marked Washington State Patrol (WSP) vehicle already on scene of a separate collision.
According to the Washington State Patrol, Vehicle 1, a 2015 Ford Fusion driven by 73-year-old Jefferson Shumate of Aberdeen, was traveling southbound on SR 107 when it approached the area of a prior collision at milepost 5. Vehicle 2, a 2025 Ford Explorer patrol unit, was positioned partially blocking the southbound lane with emergency lights activated.
WSP reports that Shumate failed to yield and collided with the patrol vehicle. The Ford Fusion came to rest fully blocking the roadway, while the patrol SUV was pushed into the southbound ditch.

Injuries and Medical Transport
Two passengers were injured in the crash:
- Barbara Sumner, 68, of Cosmopolis, a passenger in Vehicle 1, sustained injuries but declined transportation to the hospital.
- David Franzmann, 46, of Olympia, a passenger in the WSP vehicle, was transported by Sgt. A. Richardson to Summit Pacific Medical Center for evaluation.
A second passenger in the WSP vehicle, 23-year-old Jayden Watson of Aberdeen, was not injured. The WSP driver, 34-year-old Trooper Timothy Lemmon of Elma, was also uninjured.
Seatbelts were worn by all occupants of both vehicles.
Cause & Charges
The primary cause of the collision was listed as Failure to Yield.
Shumate, the driver of the Ford Fusion, faces charges of Negligent Driving 2nd Degree.
Vehicle Damage
Both vehicles sustained reportable damage. The WSP Ford Explorer was towed to WSP Property Management in Tumwater.
No drugs or alcohol were involved, according to the report.
