We have more details as of 5:34 pm on the Officer-involved shooting that took place this morning in Aberdeen Thursday, October 24th from Grays Harbor County Sheriff Undersheriff Brad Johansson Thursday, October 24th.
The suspect has been identified as a 51-year-old male from Redmond, Oregon. The suspect is currently in surgery in critical condition. The man is not known to local law enforcement.
He says that The Aberdeen Police department was dispatched to a hit and run that occurred at the Updated: Bank of Pacific at Market and G Street.
Initial reports are an Aberdeen PD officer who responded and attempted to contact a male subject in the 300 boxes of East Market Street who was possibly involved in the hit and run. It was reported the male suspect was armed with a knife and shots were fired by the police.
The male suspect was injured in the shooting and was transported to the hospital.
A citizen who witnessed the incident told investigators the suspect went towards the officer. The citizen heard the officer yelling at the suspect to drop the knife but was unable to see the suspects hands or a knife. The suspect continued to approach the officer when he was shot.
Two officers arrived on the scene during the incident and described the suspect approaching the officer and ignoring his commands prior to the officer firing his weapon. One officer was able to describe a knife in the suspects hand as he approached the officer.
A knife was recovered near the suspect. The investigation will continue as detectives contact witnesses, obtain video evidence from nearby businesses and further process the scene.
The Aberdeen Police Department requested assistance from the Region 3 Sheriff’s Office Critical Incident Investigation Team to investigate the incident.
The suspect vehicle was impounded and a search warrant will be served on the vehicle.
The team is comprised of detectives from Mason, Thurston, Grays Harbor, Lewis and Pacific counties. More details will be released as they become available.
